Message from the PresidentWhat’s New for TAOM 2014! What’s still available? LOTS of neat stuff!
Magic Camp at TAOM 2014 is a great deal for our 7-12 age group. All the events with a regular registration plus events only for the campers and possibly a chance to be on the stage for an evening performance. There are still places available for this event. If you have already registered your child for a normal event pass, contact registration@taom.org for an upgrade to include Magic Camp before it is too late and we will work with you.
HOUDINI tour with Arthur Moses! This event already has several attendees and may not be available when you arrive. Send a note with ‘Houdini’ in the subject line to president@taom.org if you want to enter the next couple drawings. You must be registered and this event occurs parallel to the events at the convention. This is a rare visit back in time.
Doug Wilson’s last hand-carved cane will go home with someone. We lost Doug shortly after the 2013 convention, and only a few people saw this beautiful cane when he presented it to me. A silent auction seems to be the only way to properly pass this cane to the next owner, and that will happen at the convention.
AURASMA – Sounds like an ailment, but looks like MAGIC. Support the convention and share a video message at no additional cost. Personal messages, advertisements, or self promotions can take advantage of this offer. Our souvenir program rates are available (see the article about the Convention Program) and we will provide the printed options that are normally expected. However, if you send a ‘video’ of 30 seconds or less to program@taom.org after you submit your order, you can be part of something that is very new. Want to deliver a sales pitch, well wishes for someone, or a tribute? Watch the youtube video with the link below and see what Aurasma is all about at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBKy-hSedg8

2013 TAOM Convention SpotlightNegotiations continue to bring to Fort Worth Emmy Award-winning actor
Max Howard and his wife,Diane Bray, as a Friday night headliner at
Casa Maña. Max and Diane perform their highly acclaimed drama and magical performance, The War Wizard. The play was inspired by the life of
Civil War Confederate magician and musician,William Augustus Reiche, who billed himself after the war as the “Wizard of the Blue Ridge and Magician of the South.” Max and Diane have performed the play, “The Great Southern Sleight of Hand Show,” in colleges and universities throughout the United States and in many community theaters. Most recently, they brought “The War Wizard” to Austin College in Sherman, Texas.
Billed by the Magic Castle’s Monthly Newsletter as “One of the Best Children’s Entertainers in the World,” Master Payne, of Washington state, is slated to perform his zany and absolutely hysterical comedy magic at TAOM. One of the quickest wits and most creative entertainers in magic, Master Payne’s performance pieces are completely over-the-top — and full of great magic, too!
Many of our SAM members are already familiar with Master Payne who is a regular reviewer of products for the M.U.M. monthly magazine. He has performed widely throughout the Northwest and has been the featured corporate performer for Microsoft, 20th Century Fox, and the City of Seattle.
The only question before the TAOM is which “Master Payne” will appear? Will it be “Calamity Payne,” Professor “Hieronymus Payne,” “Master Payne’s Medieval Magykes,” “Phineas T Payne’s Steampunk Sorcery & Flea Circus,”or “Pegleg Payne’s Piratical Prestidigitations”? Whichever— you will enjoy his hilarious magic. You can check out each the characters at www.masterpaynemagic.com

It’s Official! MAGIC IS AN ARTSeveral years ago, when Dal Sanders was Regional Vice President of the S.A.M. he was encouraged to get local and state governments to make proclamations for National Magic Week and recognize Magic as an Art. The reason was simple, many times magicians would apply for grants and get turned down because magic was considered a hobby or a craft. While the S.A.M was successful in getting local cities and states to issue these proclamations, they had not been successful in obtaining national proclamations. This is something that the Society of American Magicians had been trying to accomplish since at least the 1960’s.
As current National President of the S.A.M., Dal Sanders has continued to pursue getting national recognition for the Art of Magic realizing how important this could be to the magic community. After all, Doug Henning famously fought the Canadian government to have magic recognized as an art and that resulted in his being able to launch the show that would eventually become the hit Broadway musical THE MAGIC SHOW.
After overcoming many roadblocks along the way, Dal, working with the Mayor of a Dallas suburb, Wyle, Texas, met with members of Congress and the end result was wonderful for magic. A proclamation was entered into the Congressional Record on April 28, 2014, that proclaims that the United States Congress recognizes Magic as an Art. Magicians in the United States can now refer to this Congressional Record for support in obtaining Arts Grants and grant writers cannot ignore magic merely because what we do it “just a hobby” or at best, “just a craft”. This is just a small step in getting the recognition our art deserves, but definitely a step in the right direction. Now it is up to us to be Excellent.

The Last WordMea culpa! In last month’s issue of Magic Across Texas, I mistakenly referred to “the 2013 convention in Fort Worth”. You know and I know that the convention is in 2014 and I’m hoping to see you there! I could have said I made the mistake on purpose to see if anyone really reads the articles, but that wouldn’t be true. I do enjoy hearing from readers any time with suggestions and ideas for articles — or even corrections. Do let me hear from you.
